After researching the types of after school programs available to Austin students and their families, founder Melissa Rios learned that although there are some nature-based learning programs out there, they are not present in most schools.
At Eco Friends Camps and After School Programs, children spend part of their time outdoors collecting samples, documenting what they see, and participating in physical games that provide hands-on learning about wildlife, habitats, and ecosystems. Indoors, children analyze their samples and/or incorporate them into art activities, participate in environmental discussions, and share healthy snacks!
“In my experience, Austin parents tend to be very environmentally conscious. Many parents teach their kids how they can make small changes that have great impact. I think pairing the need for after school care with a curriculum focusing on the environment is a great way to supplement what children are learning from their parents." -- Melissa Rios, Founder and Director of Eco Friends Austin
Children have a natural interest in plants, animals, and habitats. We have a great opportunity to engage them at a time when their interest is peaked. As children advance, lessons provide them with tools and ideas that they can implement, and thereby help them contribute to a cause that may become one of the defining issues of their generation. A generation of people who are committed to conservation is invaluable!
